Self exists only in the interaction between one person and another. There is no ‘self’ without ‘other’. Just as darkness is defined in contrast to light, so the ‘self’ is defined and distinguished from which is ‘not-self’. A truly solitary ‘self’ is illusory because if I was entirely alone, I would have no concept of ‘I’. I know that I have separate self because there are others (people or things) who are not me. ‘I’ is polar with ‘you’.
The idea of this project is to explore the distinction between ‘I’ and ‘you’ through portraying ‘mine’ and ‘yours’ behaviours, habits and thoughts. ‘Yours’ and ‘mine’ polar parts of self are not isolated from each other as mutually exclusive contradictions, but they are experienced as a unit of opposites.
The exhibition consists of sixteen diptychs and sixteen pairs of imaginary polarities which are loosely coupled among themselves by applying the same principles of duality and unity in the same time.
